Oral Surgries FAQ
General Question
Maxillofacial Surgery can be overwhelming. Whether you’re scheduled for your very first oral surgery, or you’ve undergone oral surgery before, you probably have several pressing questions for your Maxillofacial surgeon.
What are the most common oral surgery procedures?
Surgical extraction of impacted teeth, usually third molars (the wisdom tooth) and canines, periapical cysts, alveolar bone grafts, frenectomies, pre prosthetic surgeries, dental implants, etc.
Why should impacted teeth be removed?
Impacted teeth such as third molars may cause pain, infection, swelling, drifting of adjacent teeth, referred pain to the ear or throat, difficulty opening the mouth, and difficulty in chewing.
Is the surgery painful?
One will experience pressure, that’s all. As it’s done under nerve block, post-op pain is well managed by the medication. There will be mild discomfort, which will settle down in 3-4 days.
Is it absolutely necessary to remove impacted teeth?
If the impacted teeth are not causing any of the problems then they can be observed very closely to notice any intrabony changes towards cysts, etc. If there is any change then it has to be extracted, and if it causes any of the above mentioned problems then yes, it has to be extracted.
